Hey all, this is Sagnik Jana from AnimeQuack and when you watch various real-life mystery movies then you have probably wondered if there are good mystery movies in anime too. So, here in this blog, I’m going to give a list of top 10 mystery anime movies of all time and from where you can watch it.
1) Death Note :
I though don’t think death note needs any explanation. It is one of the most popular dark crime thriller anime series. The story is actually based on a brilliant teenager boy named Light Yagami. One day he found a supernatural notebook called death note.
The speciality of death note is when a person write the name of someone and imagines him at the same time, then the person imagined gonna be dead. This is actually Light found out one day and used it to eliminate all the criminals from the world.
But this action of him somehow attracted the attention of a mysterious detective named L and throughout the series after that, a cat-and-mouse game started between two of them. The anime series really hold some mystery in it. Thus, it is in our today’s list of top 10 mystery anime of all time.
2) Monster :
Monstar is an anime adaptation of a well known manga series called ‘Monstar’. It ranks second in our top 10 mysterious anime of all time. It is created by Madhouse Studios.
Talking about the stories in brief, the story of the anime follows the daily life of a Japanese brain surgeon named Dr. Kenzo Tenma who lives in Germany. But life takes a dark twist when he somehow got involved in a cat and mouse game with a serial killer named as Johan Liebert.
So, what will happen with Dr. Kenzo Tenma, will he be able to get out of this blood sucking game or will he be dead, killed by the serial killer. Let’s comment if you have already watched this anime series.
The anime series explores the theme of complex plot, suspense and psychological intrigue.
3) Steins;Gate :
Steins;Gate is another popular anime. The story takes place in Akihabara, Tokyo in the time frame of 2010. The story follows Rintaro Okabe who is a self proclaimed mad scientist and runs the ‘Future Gadget Laboratory’ with his friends named Mayuri Shiina and Itaru ‘Daru’ Hashida.
With the flow of story, we see Okabe and his coordinates by accident discovered a method of time travel that gave them the ability to send text messages in the past but as the story continues, we can see the drastic turn happened in their life. You must see it once.
4) Erased (Boku dake ga Inai Machi) :
Boku dake ga Inai Machi, a japanese mystery anime series which is better known as Erased among it’s english audience gets the 4th rank in our list of top 10 mystery anime of all time.
Talking about the plot in brief, the story follows the life of Satoru Fujinuma who is a 29 years old struggling manga artist lives in Chiba province. One day he discovered that he has an unique ability called ‘Revival’ which allows him to send his consciousness back in the time moments before life threatening incidents.
One day, after discovering his father is murdered by an unknown assailant in their home, Satoru uses his ability to go back 18 years into the past when it all started. Now, he has a chance to prevent the serial killer and not only save his mother, but also the lives of three childhood friends.
The story not only discovers the theme of science fiction and thriller. The emotional dept, amazing story telling makes it a must watch mystery anime series.
5) Detective Conan (Case Closed) :
Detected Canon which is also known as Case Closed follows the story of Shinichi Kudo who is a sharp minded high school student with exceptional detective skills. This ranks 5th in our list of top 10 mystery anime of all time.
So, one day, Shinichi and his childhood friend Ran Mouri while roaming in a amusement park, discovered an illegal trade happening by two mysterious persons dressed in black.
But somehow, unfortunately, he got caught by those mysterious persons who then forced him to try their experimental drug, by which as a result, Shinichi’s body shrinked, turning him into a little child.
Rest of the story of Detective Conan or Case Closed focuses on Shinichi’s journey to solve the crimes and make a way to reverse the affects of the drug on him and how he discovered many mysterious organizations, complex puzzles throughout his journey.
6) Psycho-Pass :
Psycho-Pass is a japanese animated cyberpunk psychological thriller series first produced by Production I.G. The complete series is made on a futuristic Japan governed by a powerful biometric computer network known as Sibyl System.
It follows the story of Akane Tsunemori, a young woman who recently became novice inspector and assigned to the division of a public safety bureau’s criminal investigation division and got the job of solving crimes committed by latent criminals who more known as Enforcers.
The story got a twist when Akane suddenly discovered the real shocking truth of Sibyl system, which could determine any person’s threat level depending on their mental state.
7) Durarara!!
Durarara!! is one of the most interesting anime series among others given in this article. The first anime adaptation of it aired in 2010 which was then produced by Studio Brain’s Base.
It is consist of two seasons, where season 1 holds a total of 24 episodes, the season 2 of this series gets 12 episodes in total. Durarara!! ranks 7th in our list of top 10 mystery anime of all time.
Now, talking about the story, it first unfolds in the bustling Ikebukuro district of Tokyo where a young boy named Mikado Ryūgamine accompanies by his childhood friend Masaomi Kida moves to attend Raira Academy in search of excitement.
Ikebukuro is a melting pot of secrets where invisible gangs, supernatural beings and mysterious figures coexist. Thus as most of the mystery anime shows, it also got a mystery plot, here we gets to know about The Black Rider, a headless rider rides a black motorcycle and more such mysterious characters and happenings.
8) Higurashi When They Cry :
Higurashi When They Cry gets the 8th place in our rank of top 10 mystery anime of all time and this is one of the most disturbing anime ever made.
Talking about the storyline, the story revolves around the very rural village of Hinamizawa during 1983. It shows a group of school students whose lifes took a dark turn.
The central characters encounter strange and terrible events that eventually lead to their untimely deaths. The story is about the human soul’s struggle to survive in the face of incredible and terrifying circumstances.
The supporting characters add depth and complexity to the entire narrative. As the story continues, it is discovered that Hinamizawa’s mysterious death and disappearance is related to an alien phenomenon known as “Hinamizawa Syndrome”.
9) Another :
Another is another popular anime and ranks 9th in our list of top 10 mystery anime of all time. The story revolves around ninth grade class of Yomiyama North Middle School which became hunted by a curse.
The story shows the life of twenty six years ago, when a bright student named as Misaki dies during the school year but all the class mysteriously acted if she was alive keeping her desk, presence alive in the class.
The story got a twist when a new boy named Kouichi Sakakibara came and joined the class as a transfer student. Somehow after passing some days there, he suddenly became suspicious of the fearful atmosphere and discovered a mysterious girl who used to sit alone, but noone in the class aggreged to acknowledge her existence.
As Kouichi investigated about that, he found some of the darkest truth behind the curse and then he had to find way to stop that curse taking more lives of the students.
10) Paranoia Agent :
Paranoia Agent, a popular anime series made by director Satoshi Kon and produced by Madhouse. Talking about the story of it in brief, the story of Paranoia Agent unfolds around Musashino, Tokyo where a large cast of people got affected by a social phenomenon and by the story continues, we see some of the darkest unfolds of the characters.
In brief, Paranoia Agent shows a perfect combination of horror, mystery and tragedy. You can consider to see it once.
